Hand drawing a figure in a walking cycle, this intensive 1 week project requires student to create a smooth sense of motion in their animation and the construction of the moving strip and zoetrope carousel. This project has proven to be instructive in their digital work going forward in the term.
Students create 3 inter-related characters through extensive thumb-nail sketches. Style sheets, environments and a storyboarded scene are developed from these characters. Personality attributes are stressed as important as well as character based storytelling.
Taking their sketches from the Museum of Natural History, students swap imagery, cutting them and creating figures which are then collaged into a diorama or scene.

To inaugurate my drawing and illustration classes I have the class play a game where they must create an Illustration Mural as a group, making marks and characters in relation to those of their peers. It is a great way to start the term and create bonds between students.
Cloth drapery and reflective mylar drapery.
Each student created an isometric structure derived from a cube. Then using an isometric grid, they worked together to lay each drawing into a "landscape" scroll.
On site at Grand Central Station
Setting up a situation where students can attempt to work in the mode of Jackson Pollock, in conjunction with a lecture on Pollock.
With the aid of a local Rock/Jazz band, students' mark-making take cue from the music being played.

At a Lang College of Arts dance recital, at the Alvin Ailey Dance Studios, students were challenged to capture the figure in motion, and the character of the dance itself, in a accordion sketchbook.
